North West Durham MP Richard Holden crowns winner of Coronation card competition

Richard has organized a card competition for school children in North West Durham to commemorate the Coronation, which has been ongoing for the past few weeks.

During a recent visit to St. Patrick’s RC School, Richard presented Jake Macnamee, a 10-year-old student, with the top prize for his design.

Jake seemed absolutely thrilled with his House of Commons teddy bear, but more pleased that his hard work and funky design were recognised. While there were a few contenders among the hundreds that were submitted to Richard, Jake’s was the clear winner.

As well as HM The King potentially seeing Jake’s design on Saturday when Richard took it with him to the Coronation in Westminster Abbey, he has also sent a copy to Buckingham Palace. The celebratory card marking the Coronation was sending good wishes on behalf of the whole of North West Durham to mark the special day.

Richard also gave special fluffy Coronation pens to the two runners up, Holly Rose Hewitt age 9 of Consett Juniors and Aimee Howard aged 10 of Our Lady and St Thomas Primary Willington, who seemed thrilled with their prizes.

Richard runs regular competitions for schoolchildren in North West Durham, it’s great to see so many taking part from every corner of the area. In this instance, as with everything, it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part that counts. In this vein, Richard ensured that every single child who submitted a design received a hand written thank you from himself.

Richard Holden MP awarding winners prize

Commenting, Richard Holden MP said:

“It was so difficult to pick a winner from the hundreds of fantastic designs. It took hours of deliberating, but Jake’s design really was something special! Shout out too to Aimee and Holly for fantastic runners up entries.

“Every time I run competitions for school children I am struck by the depth of talent coming from every area of the constituency. It is wonderful to think of so many children from North West Durham sitting down and taking the time to congratulate The King in such a creative way.

“Parents and teachers should watch out for the short story competition I am planning to launch over the summer holidays. In case you missed it, or just missed out on a prize this time, make sure you keep your eyes peeled to my facebook next time for a chance of winning!”
