Orchestra North East Concert

5 July @ 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm
£1. – £18

Orchestra North East will be performing on Sunday July 5th 2026 at 3pm in the Ann Dobson Hall, Van Mildert College, Millhill Lane, Durham DH1 3LH.

Programme:
Beethoven: Overture Leonora no.2.
Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola.
Brahms: Symphony no.1.

Soloists:  Iona Brown – Violin, Michael Gerrard – Viola
Conductor: Tim Burke

Beethoven’s Leonora no.2 Overture has all the qualities we associate with his music: melody, nobility, drama and excitement and it has always provided an excellent curtain-raiser, as indeed it was originally intended so to do. The Mozart Sinfonia Concertante is quite simply one of the most charming pieces he ever wrote and shows off the two solo instruments beautifully. The composition of Brahms’s First Symphony in the 1860s clearly places it beyond the formal ‘Classical era’ but it is very much influenced by Beethoven. The melodies, textures and colours of the symphony are, however, Brahms exploring his own distinctive orchestral voice.

We are very pleased to welcome as our soloists in the Mozart two distinguished members of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Iona Brown and Michael Gerrard. We understand this work to be one of their favourite pieces, which we hope will add an extra pleasure to the performance.

Tim Burke conducts in a number of fields, most notably in the North East as the Chorus Director for the Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia. However, he is no stranger to the orchestral world and we are looking forward to working with him again.
