Sainsbury’s Bank Pet Insurance, has revealed a list of the most beloved dog-friendly destinations across the UK — and Durham is in second place, just behind Carlisle.

There are 12 million pet dogs in the UK and businesses in and around Durham are doing their bit to help pet owners enjoy more time out and about with their pets.

As part of its new Barks and Recreation campaign, Sainsbury’s Bank analysed the most dog-friendly restaurants, pubs, hotels, rooms for rent and walking routes in each city.

Nearly a third of British households own a dog and many families want their four-legged family member to accompany them on days out and staycations. So how does Durham measure up when it comes to accommodating our furry friends?

Durham: The city with the most dog-friendly rooms for rent

Durham came second in the dog-friendly rankings. With the most dog-friendly rooms for rent according to SpareRoom, catering for young professionals with a pet dog.

Durham is just a 30-minute drive from the east coast and close to the North Pennines AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), with access to plenty of long walks in the countryside. The are also several other parks in the city centre for dog-friendly weekday walks.

Top tips for renting with your pet

Make sure there is a clause in your rental contract allowing pets.
Try to find a rental with a garden so your dog can go outside.
Search for properties close to parks and green spaces so it’s easy to walk your dog.
